Chess Master
continued
She started playing chess at
the age of 3 years, encouraged by her father and uncle, who himself is a
National Master. She practises her game twice a
week on the internet. When asked what her greatest strength is, she
replied, “Most opponents underestimate me”. That is not surprising in one
so young.
“I am a quick and aggressive
player”, she continued. Perhaps her prior interest in Taekwondo has
something to do with that.
One of our Rotary members, Dr
David, met her at a competition and subsequently introduced her to our
Club. Since that time, the Rotary Club of Clark Centennial has been
helping to fund her on her travels to competitions, by giving her an
allowance and helping with the accommodation and registration fees. |

and the President of National Chess Federation, meeting Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, President
of the Philippines in
2006.

Kimberley at that time was a 3rd
year pupil at Mabalacat National High School (2007); science and mathematics
being her best subjects.
She is a
regular visitor to our Center and plays chess with some of our boys.
Amongst them, she names Danilo “Cedi” Layug as showing particular promise,
and has generously offered to give tuition to any of the boys who are
interested.
Apart from her desire to be
the first woman Grand Master of the Philippines, her ambition is to be a
lawyer with the NBI.
With a little help from her
Rotary friends, she should have a bright future.
