The Bahay Bata Center in Angeles City, Philippines, provides a home, education and a future for the street children
 


Bahay Bata Braves

              

With money Bill solicited plus a sizeable contribution from himself, a mere sugarcane field metamorphosed into a world class sports complex.


The facility presently houses a baseball field, a team changing room, built with donations solicited by Rotarian Lionel Claydon, an announcing tower, several rows of bleachers and a relaxing area with a covered fish pond and benches. Plans include the addition of a rugby pitch and perhaps a soccer field.  The entire area incorporates a watering system to keep the grass green all year round.  		    


Once the Maria Wright Field was completed, we needed a baseball team.  Through the efforts of Rotarian Director George Watson (coach) our resident children were gathered up, supplied uniforms and given an assortment of equipment donated by Knightsbridge Int. represented by Ed Artis, along with other equipment donors. 

 

    


Starting from never having swung a bat, through six months of learning and practice, we now field a very competitive team.  They have learned the skills of the game and are discovering the essence of sportsmanship and teamwork.



Our team has traveled all over the Philippines on a bus donated by the Mayor of Angeles City.  Rotarian treasurer Mark Smith took the initiative and refurbished the bus to near new condition with his own money.  The bus has been used to transport our team to away matches against teams from other provinces.  They haven't won every game, but they sure had fun, all of them.
