The medical clinic, which opened in 2001, is a primary care facility located on the ground floor of the Bahay Bata Center. It provides medical care for the resident boys in our Center, as well as being a primary medical care center for the Barangays of Cuayan and Anunas, two of the poorer communities in Angeles City. Clinics are held in the afternoons four times a week starting at 1 p.m. and are staffed by a doctor and a clinical assistant. It is a charity clinic, run and funded by the Rotary Club of Clark Centennial Street Children Foundation Inc. with the help of generous donations from outside sources.
About 5,000 medical records are currently held in our
files and there are about 3,500 patient consultations per year (75%
children, 25% adults and 25% of the total are new patients). |
Asthma is also commonly encountered in both children and adults. Unfortunately few, if any, patients are on optimum treatment simply because B-stimulant and steroid inhalers are too expensive. Skin sepsis, fungal infections, infestations and skin allergies are common as are gastro-intestinal upsets. Owing to poor environmental conditions, intestinal parasites, particularly ascaris lumbricoides, are very common. Amoebiasis is not infrequently diagnosed and typhoid fever is seen occasionally. Dengue fever comes with the wet season and carries a 1-2% mortality. |
Chronic conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis generally require life-long treatment and can be a great burden on the family’s finances. And then there are the more serious diseases that require expenditure beyond the patient’s and often our means. Ospital Ning Angeles (ONA) has been the main secondary referral center, but cannot always accommodate the patient due to financial constraints, so in these instances patients are referred to other agencies such as the Philippine Charity Sweepstake Organisation (PCSO) with variable results. Medical missions occur sporadically, allowing some patients to undergo surgery for free. There are always a number of patients on our books awaiting surgery for example cataracts, thyroid disease etc..
